Title: The State of the State of Malnutrition in Older Texans

Speaker: Matthew Lee Smith, PhD, MPH, CHES

Matthew Lee Smith, PhD, MPH, CHES, and Co-Director of the Texas A&M University Center for Population Health and Aging, will present the highlights of his expansive new research on malnutrition among Texans 65-and-older. Dr. Smith’s study provides an unprecedented analysis of malnutrition death rates among Texas seniors in all 254 Texas counties, identifying county-level characteristics–both risk and protective factors–that are driving malnutrition deaths in our older citizens. Freshly published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, his work provides thought-provoking insights as to how health care providers, community support organizations and policy makers may work to tailor and target strategies and resources for addressing malnutrition challenges in our senior population.
